La Cartella Xerox!

 

Bene oggi curiosando nelle mie directory sono incappata in una cartella che al momento mi è sembrata “sospetta”: xerox. Al che ho provato a cancellarla e mi è comparso sullo schermo un messaggio che mi diceva che la cartella era in uso. Dico sarà un worm tra tanti??? Così ho deciso di andarmi a documentare direttamente su internet!

Bello vedere come le reazioni di molti siano state simili alla mia (questo non mi fa sentire totalmente incompetente, visto anche che studio Informatica!):

Does anyone know why and what the folder named Xerox with the subfolder nwwia is and what it does? I can’t uninstal it and I’m afraid to put it in the recycle bin. I do not have any Xerox software installed (so I believe) and there’s nothing in it. Any help? Thanks! Rxloren

Grazie a questo post ho avuto un ulteriore input, bene xerox è un qualcosa che esiste a prescindere dai virus, ma cos’è? Nel sito www.xerox.com ho scoperto che è una nota casa produttrice di stampanti, fax, multifunzioni, ecc…

Ora nasce la domanda, che tra l’altro si è posto anche rxloren, ma se non ho nessun software di questa casa produttrice installato (quindi non ho stampanti,fax o altro Xerox), come fa ad esistere questa cartella sul mio pc? E soprattutto qual è la sua reale funzione???

Inoltre nel post si vede come, analogamente a quanto è successo a me, non è stato possibile rimuoverla.

One of many folders that you can’t delete. Inside the folder nwwia is 2 hided files : xrxflnch.exe and xrxftplt.exe.

E abbiamo scoperto che nella cartella Xerox, contenente a sua volta la cartella nwwia, apparentemente vuota, ci sono due file nascosti: xrxflnch.exe e xrxftplt.exe. Quindi in qualche modo questa cartella serve per proteggere questi due file.

Nel forum continuano i commenti che insistono sulla rimozione della cartella, proponendo anche un intervento da modalità provvisoria, ma ogni tentativo è vano, poiché ad ogni riavvio la cartella ricompare. Interessante è andare a vedere la data di creazione del file, nel mio caso coincide con la data di “creazione” del pc. Quindi non può essere un worm, ma è sicuramente qualcosa preesistente messo dentro dalla Microsoft (Anche se la data di creazione potrebbe essere stata modificata, ipotesi che per ora escludiamo).

Quindi è saltato fuori quello che per me, al momento è stato un “illuminante” e “sensato” commento:

I think it is a folder put there by aliens. That way they can track our internet usage. After studying our internet usage they can then target advertising (oh yes they came up with pop up ads and SPY ware). Then we’ll purchase certain products with mind controlling chips in them. Once a significant percentage of the world’s population is under their control…well YOU know the rest. We’re doomed! Ummm maybe I have too much free time?!?!?

This is not that hard. c:\program files\xerox\nwwia contain two hideen folders. The files are loaded as part of an INF install. XSCAN_XP.inf to be exact. xscan_xp.inf is in your windows/inf folder. xscan.inf is part of xerox drivers. Why windows decided to load them for no reeason is a mystery, but they are not spybots or alien software. If you are worried about microsoft spying on you, worry about this “Installing SP1 updates 11 programs to report back to Mircosoft on your actions. Mircosoft explians this is to garther informaton in its white paper on the subject. Spooler and Media viewer but report back to mircosoft the title to ANYTHING you print or watch in media player.

Così scopriamo che avere questa cartella in realtà non è preoccupante, anche se ancora al momento no si scopre la sua utilità. Infatti è normale avere nella directory c:\programmi\xerox\nwwia due file nascosti qual xscan.inf e xp.inf (che dovrebbero essere anche nella cartella windows/inf). Sappiamo inoltre che uno dei due, xscan, è parte degli xerox drivers.

Quindi non ci dovrebbe essere nessun spybots ne software alieni !

Xp has inbuilt ability to scan and OCR docs. This ability was licenced from Xerox, despite the fact that every scanner uses it’s own ocr program much better than XP built in generic hit or miss form If you are determined to use the inbuilt XP version, if your scanner will let you, it will use the Xerox/nwwia folder as tempory holding place for the files while it processes them. It is perfectly harmless so leave it alone. the same applies to the redundant frontpage folder in XP. That is there for people who have created webpages with 9x and frontpage express. the files that have been created look for that folder to hold tempory information, while they are being changed. ignore that one as well greetzzzz.

Quindi ecco svelato ”l’arcano mistero”! Così abbiamo capito cosa nasconde e protegge in realtà questa cartella: file temporanei di stampa e documenti OCR .

Infatti ogni scanner avrebbe un suo programma per gestire gli OCR che è comunque migliore della versione fornita da XP, ma se l’utente è ostinato a usare quest’ultima e se lo scanner glielo permetterà, potrà usare la directory xerox/nwwia (concessa dalla xerox) come temporanea per i file in processo.

That folder is installed in a clean install of XP and is used by the Windows Image Acquisition service. You need that service and that folder if you have a camera or a scanner. “nwwia” stands for “network windows image acquisition”.

Scopriamo così anche il significato di nwwia : “network windows image acquisition”!
